New asset tracking and management system utilizing TSL’s 1128 Bluetooth® UHF RFID Reader simplifies processes and saves time

Project Overview

An NCS client was dissatisfied with the existing inventory system for managing their global corporate artwork collection. The system utilized a rugged, Windows CE-based RFID hand-held with custom software that was unwieldy and difficult to use. NCS was asked to streamline the inventory process and provide software that was simpler and easier to use.

Challenge

The existing inventory system required complex cabling for data uploads and special software running on a laptop and the RFID reader. The Web site that maintained the data base was difficult to navigate and lacked proper audit trails. NCS’ goal was to streamline the hardware interactions, close gaps in the inventory process and to provide a more intuitive and functional UI.

Solution
Utilizing TSL’s 1128 Bluetooth® UHF RFID Reader and SDK, NCS replaced the existing inventory management system. Based on Apple iOS devices, the client was able to distribute the application via their existing MDM system. The iOS application allows the client to associate RFID’s with newly purchased artwork, perform inventory scans for any location/floor throughout their global offices, replace defective RFID tags on-the-fly when walking the floor and then wirelessly sync those results with the master database.

An intuitive UI displaying artwork thumbnails and audio/visual indications provides immediate visual feedback for scanned, missing or incorrect inventory results. Utilizing native device storage, inventories can be stopped and completed at the user’s discretion and database sync operations can be deferred in the event of low or unavailable wireless connectivity. Finally, NCS’s artwork inventory web application provides asset management and reporting capabilities.

Result/Feedback

The client is extremely satisfied with the result. The solution integrates the TSL 1128 Bluetooth® UHF RFID Reader with standard, off-the-shelf components for an easy to use and easy to maintain system. It is light in weight and intuitive to use, greatly simplifying the job of the artwork inventory manager.
